Trump prepares to meet with Putin this week
Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Trump expressed optimism about ending the hostilities, stating, “we’re going to get it done.” He added that he would speak with Putin “very soon, over the next couple of days,” without providing further details about the agenda.
Moscow has not yet commented, though it has commended the Trump administration’s peacemaking efforts and remains open to diplomacy. Trump also voiced frustration with the current state of the conflict, saying, “I am not thrilled with what’s happening there … I think it’s going to get settled.” He noted that several European leaders are scheduled to visit the US “on Monday or Tuesday” to discuss the situation.
Since Trump’s inauguration in January, diplomatic exchanges between Washington and Moscow have intensified, with multiple rounds of talks and visits by the US Special Envoy to Russia. In mid-August, Trump and Putin held a historic summit in Alaska. Although no ceasefire or formal agreement was reached, both leaders described the meeting as highly productive. Trump later stated that Ukraine cannot expect to join NATO or reclaim Crimea, which voted to join Russia in a 2014 referendum following the Western-backed coup in Kiev.
Following the summit, Trump shifted away from insisting on an immediate ceasefire, expressing support for a broader peace deal. Russia maintains that lasting resolution requires Ukraine to abandon NATO ambitions, commit to demilitarization and denazification, and acknowledge current territorial realities.
During the Alaska talks, Putin extended an invitation to Trump to visit Moscow. Last week, Putin reiterated that the invitation “is still on the table,” though no preparations for a new summit are currently underway.
