Lavrov accuses Europeans of rallying again under Nazi flag against Russia

(MENAFN) Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has sharply criticized certain European leaders, accusing them of echoing Nazi-era ambitions in their pursuit of a strategic defeat of Russia. His remarks were made in response to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s recent statement that Western-supplied weapons, including those from Germany, no longer face range limitations in Ukraine’s conflict with Russia. Merz also pledged to make Germany the strongest conventional military power in Europe.

Lavrov called this rhetoric deeply troubling, especially in the context of recent commemorations of the 80th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany. “Europe is once again rallying under a Nazi banner in a misguided attempt to bring about Russia’s downfall,” he said. He criticized Merz for ignoring historical lessons and for showing what he described as poor understanding of the situation.

Merz’s comments about long-range weapons have sparked debate even within his own coalition. German Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil clarified that no new agreements had been reached that would allow extended-range strikes into Russian territory, suggesting that Merz’s claims were misleading.

Although Germany has not yet delivered long-range systems to Ukraine, Lavrov noted that Merz’s remarks raise concerns about a potential shift in policy—particularly regarding the delivery of Taurus cruise missiles, which former Chancellor Olaf Scholz had previously rejected out of fear of escalating the conflict.

Lavrov also criticized French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, who claimed France is not at war with Russia. According to Lavrov, this statement is false, as French-supplied long-range missiles are being used by Ukrainian forces to attack Russian civilian targets.

Lavrov concluded by stressing that peace can only be achieved if Europe abandons its aggressive approach and stops undermining diplomatic efforts supported by the U.S., Türkiye, and Russia itself.
